broken wings

23 years ago I was born with #gastroschisis and I had not 1 opening but 3, where my internal organs looped out of and became infected and died. After months in the hospital in a medically induced coma I was left with the bare minimum for organs, and with a very small hope for survival. The small indent on my side was a feeding tube, since without most of my intestines, I was unable to eat. After I was finally released from the hospital my mom who was 20 years old took me to physical therapy, closely monitored the small amounts of nutrient rich sludge I was capable of eating, and ignored the fact I was not hitting milestones like a normal baby should- knowing I’ll get there eventually. I have since been through 8 surgeries, 7 of which were in my first year of life. When she was pregnant with my sister shortly after, the doctors would refer to the pregnancy as if I didn’t exist, because the new doctors did not believe a baby with my condition could have possibly survived. In 1991, Down State Medical Center used risky and never before attempted procedures to keep my 3 month premature body alive, and today the future is much brighter for children born with gastroschisis and #omphalocele 💜😘 View Larger
